Bees swarm in spring Every year, in spring, we have a number of swarms of bees looking for a new home. If they establish their hives in the trees along the creek we think it is wonderful. However as our buildings are old Australian Colonial structures there are many small entrance possibilities. They smell the honeycomb from previous hives and they quickly establish themselves in the walls of the buildings. Unfortunately the methods of removing them are pretty drastic, either tear off large numbers of weatherboards to clean out the honeycomb or resort to a chemical solution. If they can be captured while they are still swarming they can be provided a safe hive. Yesterday we had another swarm, they found a home in a log near to where customers frequent and showed every sign of being very annoyed at approaching customers. Fortunately a young chap who is establishing his beekeeping business happened along. He chainsawed his way into the log and swept the swarm into a new hive. He will be returning in a few days to set up a decoy hive to entice future swarms. So, if you are confronted with a swarm of bees there is a solution. Give Craig Terrill of Yandoit Honey a call on his mobile 044 9982 632 and he will collect the swarm before it becomes established in your wall cavity. This helps him build up his stock of productive bees as well as ensuring these vital insects continue to pollinate our food supplies. Yandoit Honey 044 9982 632, we recommend them.
