Beethoven Appreciation Month - Day 25 (cont.): Beethoven String Quartet No. 8 in E minor, Op. 59, No. 2 In this 2nd from the Razumovsky cycle quartets, Beethoven seems to be playing quite a few tricks on his patron the Russian count, if you believe Cznerys account. But in addition to the moments of alleged musical revenge, there are sequences of great sublimity and fascinating harmonic experimentation in this difficult yet engrossing work. I especially love the slow movement. Wikepedia says, According to Carl Czerny, the second movement of the quartet occurred to Beethoven as he contemplated the starry sky and thought of the music of the spheres; it has a hymn-like quality reminiscent of a much later devotion, the Heiliger Dankgesang hymn to the Divine in the Quartet Op. 132. The Cecilia String Quartet give the entire work a solid, gusto-filled performance. youtu.be/an1eJ7Z5ZMM
