Beetroot: juices and muesli: We should all eat more beetroot. If you’re sporty, you should probably drink more beetroot. And, we promise, there’s a way to make beetroot work for everyone! Beetroot juice Beetroot is phenomenally good for you. It’s low in fat, high in fibre, and rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, including glutamine (an essential amino acid), folic acid, vitamins A, B6 and C, manganese and potassium. It helps to stimulate the detoxification of the liver, boosts antioxidant enzymes in the body, as well as the number of white blood cells, and helps maintain a healthy intestinal tract. It works to lower blood pressure and to promote a healthy heart, and increases blood flow to the brain. If you’re sporty, you’ve probably heard all about beetroot juice. Beloved of champions from cyclists to wheelchair athletes, it contains high concentrations of nitrates, which are converted in your body into nitrites. These nitrites help to open blood vessels in the body, improving blood flow and oxygen levels, and thus giving a natural boost to performance. Paralympian David Weir says that beetroot juice is the secret to his success (though some strenuous training probably helped him to those medals too….)! We sell loads of beetroot juice at Naturally Good Food. Here’s what we stock: James White beetroot juice: with 90% beetroot juice and 10% apple for a bit of sweetness. There’s a kitchen-counter-style beetroot juice, for the whole family, or a tetra pack for the fridge. Deep purple, rich and sweet. James White beetroot juice with ginger: using the juice from crushed root ginger and a little touch of carrot juice, this has a slight warming spiciness and additional sweetness. James White beetroot juice with passionfruit: again, this is a slightly sweeter variety, with a little less beetroot (80%), mixed with apple juice and passionfruit juice. Something to start off with if you’re a little unsure about beetroot juice in itself. Biona beetroot juice: in a handy tetra pack – ideal for drinking, mixing or cooking purposes. Beet it! Small bottle of beetroot juice: perfect for sportspeople on the go. Beet it! Organic beetroot shot: this concentrated form of beetroot juice contains 0.3g of natural dietary nitrate in just 70ml (equivalent to 400ml beetroot juice). It’s organic, with no preservatives, and is used medically for dietary nitrate supplementation. This is simply organic beetroot juice cut with organic lemon juice. James White recommend one shot daily as part of a balanced diet (on their website, beet-it, they give full advice on when and how to drink it as part of a training regime). We also sell a Dorset Cereals raw beetroot and ginger muesli (lovely and light and crunchy, with the full ingredients comprising oats, beetroot, agave nectar, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, virgin coconut oil, flaked almonds, linseed, coconut pieces, ginger, milk thistle seed and soya lecithin). If you really want beetroot, but don’t like it cooked, or don’t want it to stain your fingers and worktops, then give this a go. So there really is something for everyone there – after all, everyone needs the benefits of beetroot!
