Before FB, I only knew how my closest friends felt about issues - TopicsExpress

Before FB, I only knew how my closest friends felt about issues pertaining to culture, faith, ethics, politics and the like. In our current social media culture we get a window into our larger circle of friends, colleagues and acquaintances belief system. So often I find myself reading a status update, a shared blog post, a quote or an article and thinking, no, that is not how I feel at all. Most of the time, I keep that to myself because Id pick conversation over coffee or tea where tone and facial expression can be used along with relationship as a buffer over the sterile nature of typed words on a screen. I have always welcomed relationship and conversation with people who think differently to me. It is essential to my well being and grounding. In fact, some of the people I have loved the most are on opposite ends of the spectrum to me in a myriad of ways. The downside to this phenomenon is how often I walk away feeling like a square peg in a round hole. In my heart I am saying but but but because I feel like an alternative point of view needs to be shared, but the thought of getting into a lengthy back and forth seems draining so the but but but gets internalized and oddly begins to takes on more significance as an ideology than it deserves or warrants. These are curious times in which we live and I am learning a whole lot about myself in the midst of it all.
