Before I forget, some afterthoughts from organizing an SfH - TopicsExpress

Before I forget, some afterthoughts from organizing an SfH event. - Dont be afraid to approach people to help you, to perform, venues to stage it, etc. No one said no to me, although finding a date to fit them all was a bit of a nightmare, and came down to one single day, chosen nearly three months ago! - Having only two readers worked fine with musical interludes. Interestingly, we both crossed genders with our choices. I gave Nicola a free choice with what she preferred to read, but we then discussed the programme and the pacing at length, and timed the event. - Let your musicians in on your planning. Suzannes choices of music fitted the stories beautifully, and the singers contributed to the shifting moods as well, although I had more input there: they gave me a choice of songs, and I chose the order. - Dont waste time inviting people who you suspect wont turn up: they wont! I plugged it a lot to the church where we held it, knowing their particular local reputation for not trying anything new. They were more than happy to host us, but of a congregation of 70 or so, we had four present, three of whom were the friends of mine who did the refreshments! But other people didnt need persuading, and one or two travelled 30+ miles to get there. The offer of wine definitely seems to help. One friend who we have known for over twenty years came because she saw a message via a Twitter friend in South Africa! - I didnt meet anyone who had come because of local radio, radio website or newspaper. They might have helped spread awareness, but I dont know. I DID meet someone who had come through seeing a poster in a community café, and also in a (different) church, but almost all were word-of-mouth (some at second and third removed) and just the one through social media. - Microphones are a readers best friend, but do a sound check first! - Ask Shelter for leaflets: the events and community people sent me a big bundle. - Enjoy it. I actually felt quite proud afterwards, and its not a feeling I get very often.
