Before I moved back to Unalakleet, Art called to ask if I wanted to take a ride to Whittier with him and several other people. It was a beautiful day for a ride, so of course I said yes. To get to Whittier, we needed to go through a tunnel that goes from one side of the mountain to the other. He pulled over before we got to the entrance. Then he went on to tell us that he had been trapped in an underground tunnel in VietNam for days and he didnt know if he had enough courage to go through. I dont remember how long we sat there, but he finally took a deep breath and said I can do this. You folks are with me. When we got through the mile long tunnel, he was shaking. He let a big breath out and had a huge smile on his face. I did it! He was so very happy because he conquered his fear. This is one of the good memories of many that I hold dear to my heart.
