Before I start, I want to make it known that I am just suggesting ideas. Nothing more than that. I get too into ideas and have to detail them out to fully make sense of them. So, bare with the length. Thanks and sorry! XD Hey guys, I have a lot of ideas for club this fall and the following semester. A friend and I just got so into suggestions on how to make Sci-fi club more fun that I had to post. As a result, this will be a long, detailed message. The plan is to make so many activities it attracts all sorts of people since our membership was lower than anticipated last year. To start: Including more genres. So you know how last semester we were more focused on sci-fi and had only little fantasy? Not only should we live up to our namesake, but I think we should include things like horror, comic book hero fantasy, video games, and cosplay. It would be fun to discuss shows, films, and books that attract a larger audience. Plus, large membership! Weekly recaps. Has anyone seen The Wil Wheaton Project? If not, check it out. Anyway, its a show that discusses everything related to sci fi, fantasy, and horror that happened during the week, usually about new episodes. We could do a form of this, where we just discuss and recap our favorite shows, films, and even news about those subjects. We could spice it up by making these recaps in the form of panels so that debates are started. Also, The Wil Wheaton Project has cool games that he plays like “How Do They Bite It?” or whatnot, which is a game where you try to guess how a certain character dies in a terrible film. There are more games than just that. It would give us all a break from just watching things every week. Movie trips. This is a pretty simple suggestion. I know weve already discussed this, but lets try to make it happen! As a variant, they dont have to be new movies. We could go to older movies as they arrive at the campus cinema or Blue Ridge Carmike ($2.75 per movie!), and maybe we could have dinner afterwards where they will be up for discussion. Cosplay. This topic is mostly for fun. We mentioned it in the very first meeting, and maybe it should be thought of again. We could have a monthly cosplay party, or once a semester, or have a cosplay competition. If enough people are interested, we could even start a cosplay committee. It would be more interesting if people that are experimenting share their ideas and show progress as they work on individual projects. Big projects. As a projection of the cosplay, I had a wild idea that maybe the people that are into costume design and/or filmmaking could do a short sci-fi or fantasy film (this would be a fun, comedic sort of venture, not a serious film), as a means of attracting more people for the following semester to show what the club is about. If not a film, maybe segments detailing the genres we discuss. Examples would be a 3 minute dorky wizard filled fantasy video, a science fiction space video, or a cheesy horror video. It would help in showing the school the amount of fun we actually have with more than just words. And finally, I think the horror genre has a lot of the same elements as sci fi and fantasy, and has been lumped in with sci fi and fantasy more and more lately. Horror movie buffs dont really have a club or a place to go, so maybe we should include it in our club to gain more membership. Overall, these are just suggestions. I am not involved with the officers anymore, but I hope you take these into consideration. Thanks for reading, and if you have any more thoughts on the topics discussed or new ideas, comment below.
