Before anyone reads this please understand that i am completely excepting of all religions and beliefs and would never challenge someone on the way they personally see the world. I am taking Philosophy 101 this quarter and have been enjoying it so far for the past week. Today we covered the topic of Socrates and his trial before the men of Athens before his death. One of the main points that Socrates emphasizes is the principal of Socratic Wisdom. Which by todays understanding translates roughly to the ability of admitting what you do not know. Being non-religious does not make me a bad person simply because i believe that i am not certain about any matter referring to life, death, and the many varieties of beliefs about life beyond death. One thing i DO know, is that i am not certain. It aggravates me slightly when religious student (not just Christians or any one religion) try to argue with out professor but can not seem to provide one simple spec of evidence or backing for their claims. A quote from a student today on the topic of How did God decide what is moral and immoral? was simply this: God said so. Again, I understand and respect all peoples beliefs, but if you are going to have an attitude towards our professor at least be able to back your opinion with more density. The biggest issue I have with religion is when people ignore the invisible line between fact and faith. Religion is a faith based life-style, not fact. Whether people have had experiences in their lives that lead them to believe religion is factual is irrelevant. This is because, in my opinion, that there is a definite line between believing in something, and knowing something.
