…Before your head hits the pillow… “Just a Closer Walk with Thee” This is the first song we have discussed with an unknown author. It falls in the gospel genre rather than the hymn genre. Some believe that it was written by African-American foundry worker, Elijah Cluke. Some evidence seems to point to the date origin of the mid 1800s but it could be even earlier than that. It became well known in the 1930s when the African American churches held very large musical conventions. Its first known recording was in 1941 by the Selah Jubilee Singers. By the end of the 1970s more than 100 separate artists had recorded the song. Just a closer walk with Thee, Grant it, Jesus, is my plea, Daily walking close to Thee, Let it be, dear Lord, let it be. I am weak, but Thou art strong, Jesus, keep me from all wrong, I’ll be satisfied as long As I walk, let me walk close to Thee. Through this world of toil and snares, If I falter, Lord, who cares? Who with me my burden shares? None but Thee, dear Lord, none but Thee. When my feeble life is o’er, Time for me will be no more, Guide me gently, safely o’er To Thy kingdoms shore, to Thy shore. This song calls us to a closer and stronger walk with Jesus. Nothing is more important in the life of a Christian than his or her walk with Jesus. The closer our walk with Jesus, the greater our peace and contentment, even in times of distress. Our constant plea should be for a closer walk with Jesus. When we are weak, He is ALWAYS strong. A close walk with Jesus keeps us from wrong. A close walk with Jesus also assures contentment and satisfaction in our day to day life. The closer we walk with Jesus, the more likely we are to hear Him when he speaks - ”For God does speak, now one way, now another, though man may not perceive it.” Job 33:14 If we are walking closely with Jesus we will do as is commanded in Philippians 2:3 - Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves… The wise author of this song knew that we will falter and fail as we go through the toils and snares of our earthly existence, but he also knew that it would not matter because Jesus shares all of our burdens. ONLY Jesus shares ALL of our burdens. And finally, when our feeble life is finished, when we have run the race and our time on this earth is over, Jesus will take us gently by the hand and lead us into our eternal home, over to the shore of His kingdom. Our challenge from this gospel song is to strive daily to walk closer and closer with Jesus. Jesus wants us to walk with Him daily and if we do, the benefits to our daily lives will be immeasurable! Walking closely with Jesus does not guarantee us a life free from pain or disappointment, but it does guarantee us a life of contentment, peace, and joy. If you are lacking in contentment, peace, and joy then there is a fix for that – A closer walk with Jesus. Just a closer walk with Thee, grant it Jesus, is my plea. Daily walking close to Thee, let it be, dear Lord, let it be
