Beginning in the 1900s, there have been substantial studies relating to literacy acquisition and scholars have stated that literacy has its roots in emergent literacy. Emergent literacy goes beyond children’s interaction with books and encompasses all literate behaviours that are within the environment where the child is born and nurtured as displayed by the child before the child formally goes to school (Gibson, 1989). What has been established is that different cultural environments give different literacy events and practices which in turn bring about literacy. This means that even games played in different cultural environments will be different from the other. It has been established by scholars that games can be used to teach literacy.
