“Being a role model is the most powerful form of educating” - John Wooden Good Sunday Morning Everbody! Do you know what a role model is? A role model is someone who another person admires and tries to be like. Ol’ Knute says that the members of the Canton C-Hawk football team have become role models for the younger kids in Canton because they have won a State Championship in football. But it isn’t just the winning that has made them good role models. Winning the state title certainly has gotten the attention of the younger kids in town, but what really makes the C-Hawk players good role models is that they showed so many good character traits along the way. Setting a goal and working hard to achieve it with perseverance, dedication, teamwork, respecting their coaches and teachers and each other, caring for one another….these are the character traits that helped to win the big trophy for the team, and these traits are what makes the C-Hawk players good role models for the next generation of C-Hawks. It’s not hard to become a good role model for others if you stick to doing things the right way. If you believe in and follow the Six Pillars of Character… Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship you will become a good role model for others and you might not even realize it. Here is a short story that gives a very good description of what it takes to be a good role model. The author is unknown. “One of my role models was Elmer Writman. He lived in our neighborhood when I was a kid, and every evening, he walked. Long walks. And every evening, when he passed my house, my friends and I would ask if we could walk with him. He was sort of like the Pied Piper. On our walks, Elmer talked to us about world events, chemistry (his passion and profession) and the importance of staying active. Walking, swimming and tennis were his favorites activites — and he taught dozens of kids in my neighborhood to play tennis using old racquets we borrowed from him. Elmer also listened, and in doing so, taught us that our thoughts and opinions mattered. He ended every conversation and walk by thanking us for joining him, and by referring to us as “gentlemen and scholars” — even though we were only kids. I’m sure he never saw himself as a role model, but he taught a lot of us to think more broadly and to treat each other with dignity and respect. He was a great role model, and I intend to do him the honor of telling his story whenever I can.” Clearly the man in this story displayed the Six Pillars of Character. As you read through it I think you can find a examples of each one. Youll probably also notice that the most important thing of all is how you treat others. So, if you want to be someone who others look up to. If you want to be a leader. If you want to be respected and admired by others……just be TRRFFC (trustworthy, respectful, responsible, fair, caring and a good citizen). Then you will be a strong and good Role Model for others. Have a GREAT day everyone!
