Being born and raised in Canada, the thought of not having a - TopicsExpress

Being born and raised in Canada, the thought of not having a wheelchair when needed just doesnt occur. Unfortunately, the reality for people with disabilities living in countries like Cambodia are quite the opposite. Last week while donating a wheelchair to landmine victim Khuy Sophar, who lost both her legs at the age of eleven, put things into perspective. Cambodia still has an estimated six to eight million unexploded landmines that result in death and injury to innocent people. While giving her the wheelchair I was shocked to hear her story about how difficult things were for her. She rarely goes out, and she is in constant depression. I gave her some words of advice and was happy to see how thrilled she was to have her own wheelchair. “What I’ve discovered over the years is that not only are people with disabilities in this community marginalised, they’re actually isolated to the point where they’re just not seen, not heard from, or may have no connection to the real marketplace at all.” - Rick Wakeman Scott Rains Bill Forrester Jani Nayar
