Being critical of social media is difficult for us because were a marketing company, and if we tell people we dont think Twitter and Facebook is the solution to their particular challenge, we run the risk of looking out of touch. Weve discussed the concept of the anti-social network in the office so many times, but never this well. Our approach is to always encourage our clients to focus on developing a high-quality product, service, or experience. Worrying about posts, likes, and re-tweets isnt the way to build an identity. Making a meaningful contribution to someones life is. The posts and interactions will come if the experience is genuine. If your value to your patrons isnt apparent, no amount of hash tags will change things. Social media is really just word of mouth 2.0. And maybe that is an old-fashioned way of thinking, but we stand by the idea of striving for excellence and letting people say good things about us, and we encourage our clients to do the same. Its better than throwing a bunch of senseless chatter into the world and hoping something goes viral. Maybe were wrong, but watching this guy nail social media to the wall was refreshing.
