“Being ‘happy’ is absolutely ludicrous. In Europe, the American message that you must be happy – it is your right to be happy – NO, actually, it is your right to regulate all of your emotions. Because if you want to be happy all the time, that is the definition of madness. Happiness is actually being able to sit with your sadness or your anger to get into that feeling so that you can then detach it and move past it. It is deep work. It is living a certain kind of life too. It’s having nurturing and meaning. Americans define happiness as euphoria – that’s the other problem: we don’t even know what happiness is. We think happiness is having it all, being euphoric all the time; that’s some bullshit. You are set up to fail. It is like being tickled 24 hours a day; eventually that’s shitty. Or being a heroin addict, because heroin addicts are very happy when they get their drug. But is that happiness? No, happiness is having a skill that you can contribute with and having quality relationships. It comes from a deep, nurturing, meaningful place that is different than euphoria. Euphoria is not bad, but it’s not meaningful.” -Simone Bienne and Dr. Drew drdrew/051-simone-bienne/
