Being kind and gentle is not a very hard argument to win. Any horse person who claims to love the horse will agree that kindness and gentleness is the way. The problem is to actualize it. Kindness and gentleness are not a theoretical ideal but a practical day to day way of working with the horse. This is the noble path. Dressage is the actualization of kindness, lightness and gentleness direct toward oneself and the horse. If it is not this then it is certainly not good dressage.
