Beloveds, now we truly know How the absence of one light can leave our eyes aching Now that our shining star has slipped away from our fingertips Like the flowing summer wind. Take notice, our dearest brother: star walker, child lover, fancy shoe wearer You have not escaped our doting embrace For we know that you in spirit are ever-present Even as the angels sing, we ask that you whisper ‘thank you’ in His ear For you were truly a blessed gift unto our world Now for us No clocks can recount the moments that rang the truest happiness No ocean tides to renew the grief that’s built up like sand castles Carefully crafted amidst a humming universe, from the Creator he came to us Black golden amber dashing, tender like a song Love in abundance never changing, Even as he was called home Despite the anguish of his later days He was sheathed in wife love and child love, Color love and friendly love and survived to speak louder than his pain And he did more than that He thrived with compassion for those who cared for him, Humor and style he kept Whether we knew who he was or did not know, When we did not have him any longer – we wept He was ours and we were his We had him Beautiful smile, delighting our eyes. Robert, meek and African proud He walked the earth softly but carried a fire That followed him into the whirls of the tossing tides He was always thinking of others Knowing Robert, he’ll spend his time harvesting bundles of peace To blend with the salt that filters through the eyes of those who weep And the joys of his heart will keep us alight Africa knows, as do we that Robert was like the sun Bright and warm – ready to shine even through thickening clouds Always arise and at the ready to serve the purpose of God A glimmer of brightness hit my eyes even as it was dimming With enchantment in my heart, I bore his thankfulness As I held up the hand that reached for mine Even through the heavy struggle hard pressed upon his abdomen – His head raised high to see the joys of his family I witnessed his sacrifice as the sound of his breath nestled in my ear His friendship as he whispered he loved me He gave In his sickness he held nothing but his faith But in his love he held everything And he gave us all he had been given Beloveds, we now know that we know nothing But we do know that we had him And will carry him forever more Rest well Mr. fancy shoe wearer, Robert, friend.
