Below is an exchange between my friend Charles and me about the big roundabout: (Charles) Lori, I drove through the big roundabout from the east and the Yield sign was skewed so not visible at the point of head checking to the south. That is a dangerous situation to folks not familiar with roundabouts. (Lori) I would like to post your remark on Stop the Roundabout FB page. Is that OK with you? We are now trying to find ways to make the RABs safer, and your remark could help, perhaps. (Charles) Sure. Are there impressions in the concrete or reflectors on the road surface that would help this? More signs arent the answer, but alerts are. That Yield sign coming from Lisbon is horrible.... there are SO MANY signs and distractions at that intersection. One solution would be to decrease the amount of visual pollution... trees. (Lori) Oh, no...Not the trees! (Lori) So far as I know there are no impressions in the concrete, and they cheaped out on the lighting as well. (Lori) We live just parallel, more or less to the big RAB, and I can tell you that traffic noise is more and louder than before it was built. (Charles) I mean that trees are a solution to hide the visual pollution, all the signs that surround the roundabout. Its a lot of stuff to pay to distract the driver. (Lori) I agree there is much distraction there. I travel the Middle Road RAB outside Bettendorf frequently, and it works slicker than snot. Unfortunately, this is not true of the MV RAB, just like William Niemi told them (Mayor and City Council) on 2-25-13. (Lori) The intersection at Highways 1 & 30 does not meet federal criteria for roundabout placement. But apparently we dont pay attention to details such as that.
