Below is the response I have had from Cllr Noonan to and e-mail recently sent Dear Ian 20mph zone I am aware of the issues around Whitley’s roads. The accident in Abbey Road prompted residents to do a petition that I supported calling on better road safety in the area by introducing a 20mph Zone for the Whitley area. This petition was discussed at a number of council meetings resulting in a proposal for all of Coventry (excluding main roads) becoming a 20mph zone. Within would be ‘priority area’s’ that would receive funding to put traffic speed reducing measures in place. (NOT speed humps). A report listing these priority area’ s is due to be published end of July and I hope Whitley area is included. London Road pedestrian crossing Residents have handed in a petition that i am supporting call for better safety measures at the pedestrian crossing on London Road. Myself and Cllr Bailey recently had a meeting on site during the morning as school children were on their way to school. A number of different options for improvements was discussed and will be included in a report to be published either end of this month or early September. ASDA Island/ London road inbound. Although I no longer travel on this section of London Road in morning rush hour I am aware of Abbey Road being used as a shortcut to avoid queuing traffic. There is a lot of traffic issues around Whitley at the moment while road works at Toll Bar Island, Cable laying on London Road and more to come with the Bridge into JLR starting shortly./ A lot of this traffic is caused by workers traveling in and out of JLR. With the new bridge that is due to be in place by this time next year, hopefully a lot of these problems in the area will be solved. Unfortunaltl;y there are a large number of JLR workers who are parking in Abbey Road and Leaf Lane (Whitley). This is because JLR workforce is expanding and not enough car park spaces on the JLR site. JLR have introduced a park and ride on Rowley Road Baginton, and I am told are looking at building a multi-storey car park on site, as long as the vehicle is legal (tax, insurance etc.) and is not parked dangerously or causing an obstruction there is very little the council or police can do. Double yellow lines have already been placed on the bends in Leaf Lane Whitley. To open up ‘The Jag Road’ would in my view not solve any of the problems you list. It is currently widely used as a cycle way and footpath for residents and school children. Not sure how Whitley residents would feel about having the possibility of the 4,000 people who now work at JLR Whitley driving along The Avenue or Abbey Road every morning and evening, especially with the three local schools in the area. Buses in Abbey Road Since the Council no longer runs bus services, The bus companies can choose what routes they use. I presume that stagecoach who run the x16 along Abbey road pick up and drop of a large number of passengers that make it a viable route. I have recently written to CENTRO who oversee e the bus services objecting to a double decker bus on this route. I am awaiting a response. Of course I would not want to see this service lost as I know many residents without a car value this service. As part of the 20mph zone I would support double yellow lines at the junction of Abbey Road and Ashington road. There is often cars parked on bends making it a poor vision for drivers, also yellow lines on Abbey road opposite this junction would enable this short section on top of the hill to be a passing point for drivers. I doubt residents would welcome this suggestion but safety for pedestrians and car drivers comes first. Road surface Abbey Road is due for some plane and patch work the weekend of 12 & 13 July. Abbey Road will be CLOSED while the works are being done. School Zig Zags As a Governor of Both Alice Stevens and Whitley Abbey Primary I am aware of the problems of parents parking inconsiderably as they drop their children off to school. I am also aware of the work teachers at these school do in trying to prevent parents doing so. I regularly request for traffic enforcement officers to regularly patrol this area and hand over parking fines to parents who park dangerously. I know many of my comments you may not agree with but I hope I have given an explanation as to what your local Councillors, Cllr Bailey and myself are doing to try to resolve these issues. We keep residents informed through our email update we send out every week. I have added your Email address to our list. If you do not find it interesting and do not wars to receive them please let us know and we will delete your details. We do not pass your details onto anyone else. Best wishes Cllr Hazel Noonan
