Below you will find the LIFEgroup questions that pertain to todays sermon: LIFEGROUP DISCUSSION QUESTIONS 1. Of all the married people you know, what percentage of them seem to have a really happy marriage? What do you think are some practical reasons why some have very successful and happy marriages and others don’t? 2. If you and your spouse must make a decision and you aren’t able to agree, how do you decide what to do? How well does this work for you? How do you perceive most people deal with this problem? 3. Read Ephesians 5:22-24. What are the reasons these verses are so controversial and offensive to most people in our culture today? Why do you think many people react so strongly to the idea of a wife submitting to her husband? Many people today believe these verses were only meant for the oppressive culture in first century Ephesus, not for our more enlightened culture today. Others believe that Paul was a woman hater who wanted to perpetrate the oppression of women which was common in the first century. Some believe these verses are just another illustration that the Bible is totally out-of-date and untrustworthy. How would you respond to those ideas? 4. Many people in our culture strongly object to any suggestion that there should be different gender roles in a marriage. What do you think about this? 5. Divide the following verses up to read out loud. All of them use the same Greek word translated “submit” in Ephesians 5:22. In each passage identify who submits to whom: Luke 2:51, 52; Romans 13:1; 1 Corinthians 15:28; Ephesians 5:21; Ephesians 5:24; Hebrews 13:17; James 4:7; 1 Peter 2:13, 14; 1 Peter 2:18; 1 Peter 3:1, 5; 1 Peter 5:5 6. How do all of the passages you just read impact your understanding about submission? Explain which of them suggest that submission does not necessarily indicate lessor value, importance, or inferiority. 7. If all Christians are commanded to submit to each other (Ephesians 5:21), how does this affect your understanding of a wife’s responsibility to submit to her husband? 8. Next week’s sermon deals with husbands. Read Ephesians 5:25-33. How do these verses affect your understanding of the dynamics Paul envisioned for wives and husbands in marriage? 9. What advice would you give to an engaged couple about dealing with gender roles in their marriage?
