“Benders: From Some Group to Abreact”? While Brisbane - TopicsExpress

“Benders: From Some Group to Abreact”? While Brisbane hasn’t traditionally been known as the cultural capital of the universe (take a hike, Melbourne), the place where I, ahem, grew up has produced lots of great acts, including The Riptides, The Go-Betweens, Powderfinger and Ed Kuepper. See a dated but still valuable book called “Pig City: From the Saints to Savage Garden” by Andrew Stafford for further details of good times and some crap in Brisvegas. Back in the day you could see the word “Custard” written on a bridge in the inner-city, however, perhaps the Brisbane City Council has washed it off. Custard, if you haven’t heard, produced one of Australia’s best pop songs, “Girls Like that (Don’t Go for Guys Like Us)”, yonks after that graffiti first appeared. This brings me to Bendigo and an interview I recently conducted with Mick Griffin, rock promoter/radio presenter/music nerd etc, about his many musical experiences, including attending lots of gigs right here. Won’t pre-empt the discussion because it can be heard soon, but if the history of Bendigo’s music scene ever gets written it’s got to include talk of gigs at the Showgrounds, Velvets, Rosalind Park, as well as touring acts such as The Reels, The Dugites and many more. What a book about Bendigo’s musical scene would be called is an interesting question: “Benders: From Some Group to Abreact”? Being a bit of a music geek as well, I was very excited to find an old documentary on YouTube about the Brisbane music scene which made mention of the gorgeous song, “Lee Remick” by The Go-Betweens: “She comes from Ireland, she’s very beautiful. I come from Brisbane and I’m quite plain.” I’m looking forward to catching up with a bunch of performers, including Old World Sparrow and Magna Mouse, and investigating other venues. See you on the flip side, Bendvegas. youtu.be/2p9lNUHM_pc
