#Bermuda NEWS Crafted from 24 karat gold and swollen with emeralds, the cross Bermudian diver Teddy Tucker recovered from the wreck of the 16th century Spanish ship San Pedro was valued at $250,000 by the Smithsonian Institution shortly after its discovery in the 1950s. The single most valuable piece of treasure ever salvaged from the sea at that point, the cross was discovered to have been stolen in 1975 and replaced with a plaster substitute when it was moved from the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum & Zoo to be displayed at the newly-opened Bermuda Maritime Museum. The cross and Mr. Tuckers other treasure hunting exploits in Bermuda waters later inspired the bestselling Peter Benchley novel The Deep and the subsequent movie adaptation starring Jacqueline Bisset. Mr. Tucker died on Monday at the age of 89.
