Besides the Secretariat, Yangon’s General Hospital (1904-1911) is the other major contribution to Rangoon’s cityscape designed by the head of the Public Works Department’s Henry Hoyne-Fox. The hospital was cutting edge upon its completion and featured operating theatres with electricity and rooms for anesthetics. The floors were made of reinforced concrete, a first for Rangoon. The old General Hospital is today unable to provide the full range of modern medical services, although new equipment is slowly being installed here and in the 1980s New Yangon General Hospital across the road.
