Best Burgers Ever- Many people think they know what the best - TopicsExpress

Best Burgers Ever- Many people think they know what the best burger is, but I am the one who does. One can look at me and my mighty bulk and see that I am an expert. As a matter of fact this knowledge may be to my detriment. Living in a tourist town like Pigeon Forge, I find myself surrounded by restaurants and burgers places. Nearly all places which serve food have a burger. McDonalds is right down the street and four more in the area. Three Wendy’s, Four Burger Kings, two Sonics, one A & W, one Five Guys, and multiple more make it hard for a fat man to escape. Of those listed, Five Guys is the best. I remember when My hometown Corinth got a McDonalds and much later a Krystal. Lines of people and cars double and triple parked around the building. Police had to be called to handle the traffic. My Lord! IT is just a burger and not a very good one. By far the best burgers that Corinth ever had was made at Bruce’s (Bruce Brown) in South Corinth. Good meat, great buns, and hand cut fries mixed with good salt of the earth people was hard to beat. I still remember crying when Corinth opened package stores. Not because I am a teetotaler but because Bruce shut down to open R & S Package Store with Roy Savage. Life was never the same. Corinth served the old fashioned burger which was an instrument during hard times to make meat go further. Potato flour or oatmeal were mixed with eggs, pepper and salt, made into patties and deep fried. Corinth still honors these old fashioned burgers called slug burgers with a Slug Fest, I mean Festival. People outside the area things of slugs (Snails) but it used to cost a nickel and you might be able to sneak a slug of lead in for one. The burger of today was called beef burger and was all beef with no added fillers. Heck, I like em all….. Grilled, fried, and laid to the side with fries, chips or drowned in ketchup or mustard, I loved them all. Just the other day, Steak and Shake opened in Sevierville, for over a week, although some better now, fender benders, full parking lot, winding lanes of drive-thru traffic, frustrated workers and patrons hectically crowd in like it is the last burger they will ever get. Get a Life! It is just another burger, but a pretty good one. The Shakes are good too. I will go when things calm down, like I need to. But the very best burger that ever was made was made in the summer of my fourteenth year. I had my tonsils and adenoids remover that year and I was told several times that the older one was when this was done the more trouble you would have getting over it. It is true I can attest. When I left the Tupelo hospital in a day or so, Dr. Franks told me to go home take it slow but have a burger he said with a smile. I knew he was a kidder but that seemed mean. I was preparing for ice cream and pudding and soft scrambled eggs for days. It seemed I was getting worse and pain was increasing. The throat seemed so tight and stiff. Ice cream held and melted even hurt to swallow. I was tired of it too. Mom decided I was not doing well enough and so she called the good Doctor Franks. When she told him her concern, he laughed and said, “Get that boy a couple of burgers quick! I was not kidding. It will exercise the muscles and break loose the old crust that formed. Have him eat slowly and soon he will be back to normal.” Mom did as instructed. She fixed me two big ground chuck burgers on toasted buns. They had been made with pepper and Worcestershire sauce. On them were thick slices of Spanish red onions and hamburger dill slices. She had Heinz Ketchup and French’s Mustard on standby. A platter of hot home-made French fries with the skin still on was by the burger plate and they were all hot and golden brown with pepper and salt. A big pitcher and a cold frosty mug of sweet ice tea and slices of lemons waited on me. I slowly began to eat them and my throat pained but I swore I felt better faster. I made more progress in the next 3 hours than I had in the prior three days. I swear before the Lord those were the best burgers ever. Now Aunt Erma would say after every meal she ate that it was the best ever, but I am not doing that. They were good beyond measure. I know I was tired of a bland diet. I know it was my Mom that cooked them. I know I felt better that I had. Most of all, I think the reason those burgers were so good was because of my Mom’s secret ingredient. It was called LOVE!
