Best-Selling Author Michelle Alexander and Drug Policy Alliance’s asha bandele Discuss Impact of The New Jim Crow, and Next Steps to End the Drug War and Mass Incarceration. Special RSVP-Only Conference Call to Allow Press and Public to Hear About Challenges and Opportunities Ahead and Pose Their Own Questions On Thursday, March 6th, from 1:00 – 2:00 pm, EST, Michelle Alexander, author of the best-selling The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness will join the Drug Policy Alliance’s asha bandele for a discussion of the book’s impact. Alexander’s book, which spent nearly 80 weeks on The New York Times best-seller list, brought to the forefront a national conversation about why the United States had become the world’s largest incarcerator, with 2.2 million in prison or jail, 7.7 million under control of the criminal justice system, with African American boys and men—and now women—making up a disproportionate number of those imprisoned. Alexander identified failed drug war policies as the primary driver of those numbers, and called for a greater challenge to them by key civil rights leaders. In the nearly four years since the book ignited a nation-wide soul-searching on the issue of race and mass incarceration, how has the advocacy landscape changed? What does Alexander have to say about the Obama Administration using its second term to highlight concerns about the drug war and racial disparities? Is there anything we can learn from places as distinct as Colorado and Portugal about what happens in a nation when compassion replaces punishment as the primary response to some or all drug use? What does Alexander see as next steps in the work to restore disrupted communities and what work is she looking to next undertake? These questions and others will be answered on Thursday, March 6th, 2014, from 1:00 to 2:00 pm. To participate, you must RSVP to [email protected] for dial-in and passcode numbers.
