Best and most truthful thing Ive read today. What’s the difference between a corrupt congress and a corrupt Supreme Court? A corrupt congress can hypothetically be replaced every four years , but a corrupt supreme court is there until death or decision dictates otherwise. Corrupt politicians, subject to election and replacement, are pieces on the Monopoly board; but buy the Supreme Court, and you can change the game’s rules at will. Of all the damage George W. Bush has done to our nation, and the damage has been almost unaccountable, his most insidious piece of work was the appointment of Supreme Court “Justice” Clarence Thomas. Bush appointed Thomas to replace Thurgood Marshall, a move viewed even at the time as the cynical replacement of one legendary black guy with another black guy. Looking past his skin color, though, Bush knew that Thomas was as corrupt and as dyed-in-the-wool a conservative as they come. But, nobody minded because…well, black guy. Good for you, Bush. Since taking his seat as a lifetime rulemaker, Thomas hasn’t even attempted to hide his political agenda; he’s stone tool of whoever pays the most money, and he knows it. Silent during deliberations and disinterested in hearing arguments, Thomas’ verdicts are paid for before he shows up for work. As The Young Turks’ Cenk Uyger points out, Thomas’ verdict on opening the floodgates for the Koch Brothers to buy our democracy is hardly unexpected. His support for removing all limits on campaign spending go as far back as 1976: he was the driving force behind Koch-sponsored Citizens’ United. There’s a good chance we could be stuck with Thomas, consistently working to undermine our democratic republic, for the next 20 or 30 years, assuming it even exists in such a recognizable form by then.
