Beth coined a phrase last year that has stuck in my mind. Its disability awkward. She used it to describe kids at school who freak out or are uncomfortable around those with a disability. Theres plenty of people out in the community who are Disability Awkward too. They stare (or avoid eye contact) attempt to whisper discreetly or perhaps comment loudly and then theres the group who use inappropriate language like retarded wheelchair girl dumb etc. Now before a few of my more militant FB friends start arcing up, calm down and read the rest of my post. Sometimes going out to a function that is in the wider community can be a bit daunting. Last nights Night for Cambodia was a prime example. Most of Beths teachers and friends are not aware that her sister uses a wheelchair and communication aid or that her dad is blind. A lot of them have had very little to do with people who have the level of disability Em has. Thats ok. But it can be quite uncomfortable walking into that environment ( its also why some people with disabilities choose only to socialise with other people with disabilities but that is a whole other topic) Last night it was refreshing to walk up to a table and sit with the grand parents of one of Beths friends who we had never met. They greeted us and then the Nona (Grandma) turned to Em and said this is exciting isnt it. She wasnt in the least uncomfortable and she wasnt phased when I assisted Em with her meal or with her PODD book. I do wish more folk were like that. People dont realise how hurtful whispering, pointing, staring and inappropriate language can be. Most would be unaware of the impact it has on a family and the ongoing repercussions.
