Betrayed by a kiss? Actress Scarlett Johansson has made headlines over the past year or so due to her refusal to join other Hollywood celebs in their efforts to boycott (and divest from) the State of Israel. In fact, she signed up to serve as a paid spokesperson for Sodastream, a very successful Israeli company whose soft drink kits are now sold in Walmarts all over the USA. Now the anti-Israel Arabs are furious because a well-known Egyptian actor kissed ScarJo in her latest sci-fi thriller, Lucy. They say hes a traitor to his own people. Some readers have pointed out that there are similarities between this latest episode and the time when Omar Sharif kissed Barbra Streisand on screen in Funny Girl (1967). That kiss, too, engendered controversy in Egypt—including this headline in a Cairo newspaper: Omar Kisses Barbra: Egypt Angry (tcm/this-month/article/220494|0/Behind-the-Camera-Funny-Girl.html). I realize this whole controversy sounds trivial to some of us, and rightfully so; nonetheless, it shows how deep the cultural divide is between Jewish people and their Arab cousins, and it also shows us that some things havent changed much since 1967!
