Between humor, irony and insult Laughter is an expression of human facial expressing joy. Laughter is a normal reaction of a healthy man to a comic situation accompanied by relaxation. What triggers laughter? Humor is a trigger for laughter. Having humor means to have the ability towards joke and irony hidden under an apparent seriousness. There are people with a good sense of humor who by their behavior or by what they say can make others laugh. There are also people who use words in a different manner. And what happens under these circumstances? Well, it easily comes to irony, sarcasm and even insults. Irony is a powerful instrument when it is correctly used. Thomas Mann once said: ”Irony is a grain of salt, because of it the meal is tasty.” Being ironic is not an easy task. Irony or self-irony requires a strong sense of observation, and by using words or phrases that contain a slight twit with opposite meaning than usual, those features that deviate from proper extent are thus emphasized. Irony, however, is not humor. Irony can be funny for some people, but for sure it is not fun for the bantered person, at least, not in all the cases. Sometimes, an offence caused by irony can be unintentional. However, there are moments, when irony, as inspired as it might be, is not understood by the person on whom it was used. Sometimes, irony is used with malice, with the express desire to hurt, to offend, to insult or even to humiliate. I am sure that each of us have had at least one episode when we were someone else’s irony target. From my own experience, I know that I didn’t like it. And not because I have a low IQ level, but because at that moment I felt like the sting of a whip on my face. We should be careful in using words. They can hit hard, can cut deep and can leave wounds. It’s great to be able to tell a joke, to have humor, even to be ironic sometimes, but we must be careful. We can easily reach sarcasm or insult. And maybe we don’t want that.
