Between naturally and forcibly establishing the attention on the breath, which is better? Answer: The breath is a bridge between the body and the mind. Our breath is influenced by physical and mental surroundings and in turn affects our body and mind. We breathe short breaths when the body is agitated, we are sick, we are tired, we are nervous or upset, or we are excited because of fear, happiness, or sadness. We breathe long breaths when the body is restful, the body is healthy, we are in a good mood or our mind is serene and happy. Forcing or adapting our breath to be long and relaxing can resolve all symptoms present with short breathing. When you feel calm, go back to your normal breathing pattern. Maintain mindfulness and clear comprehension so you are well prepared for calm and insight meditation.
