Between the head and the hands, there must be a heart, the Mediator. (Bubbas thoughts for today are from director Fritz Langes epic 1926 surrealist classic film Metropolis. When a society clashes between those who make and enforce the laws with the hands of the underprivileged who have no clear concept of the importance they also make within the society, and an entire culture has become dependant upon the technology and machines that are easily misconstrued by the masses. Lange artfully uses the old biblical metaphor of The Tower of Bable, illustrating how lack of perception leads to frustration, angst, anger, violence, and chaos, ...which nearly annilates not only the entire prosperity of the Society, but nearly even catastrophically takes the very lives of the children. The misguided notions are further propelled by the devious intentions of a madman, whos misuse of machinary and technology corrupt and mislead the unsuspecting masses to anarchy, all thru the means of a robot disguised as a prophet! Yet while this particular piece of unparalleled art, in my opinion, holds a place not only historically to modern Sci-fi buffs, it captures a sense both culturally and contemporarally the age old struggle of society, sometimes aided and always abated by progress. It is a masterpiece of art, and a fiction that is more telling upon humanity than we ought admit in its frankness. While this tale is well-known to many, it bears watching again. Contemporary events today seem to ironically repeat the process described by the onslaught of media, seemingly bent on reporting testiment lacking in fact. A A hierarchical system that has somehow lost touch with compassion, and a privileged class who dominate, though in numbers are within the upper levels of a citys elite, yet are also by number of population a ruling minority to a massive group of frightened, angry and frustrated citizens. Perhaps predicabally, it is not a surprise when this human mass of underprivileged began resorting to violence and vigilante leadership in a futile attempt to be understood and appreciated. Metropolis is now a restored classic. Recently discovered original footage was discovered in Buenos Aires, as the original footage had become edited, slashed, and for 80 decades thought lost. The sublime comparisons appear to my mind to current chaotic events today, exemplified by the Ferguson riots recently, yet have existed for many, at least in their frustration, for episodes and long decades of repeated strife. I take no sides with either, yet I was taught early on in my life the stringent need for authority. Perhaps this was a privaliage of sorts. Yet as a young teenage man, who worked in my Uncles small grocery, I saw the struggles, joys, plights, and pains of a predominately black race of disenfranchised, indigent, and frequently illeterate people who were kind, y polite, and grateful to my Uncle for his savvy compassion and sincere devotion to them as members of the human race. It was an education unparalleled within my early upbringing, and I daresay not administrative course of sociology would have improved my thoughts or opinions in any way better. Of course, this was decades ago, during the turbulent era or the Civil rights years of the 60s. Back then, and certainly today, we as a multi cultural society were, and remain desparately in need for a Mediator. Whether more than one might be usefull, we can certainly Not ever be able to determine. Christ, Dr. King, Gandhi, the President, or Pope, none seem so far capable of yet reaching some area of mutual ground. And current black leaders seem to alienate the confusion of the many whites when the messages they snd resonate with emotion resounding speech about profiling, race, injustices, and respect. Yes, there have been injuowever at least one appears necessary who will cast egotistical venues and personal prejudices aside. Someone who can listen with the necessary heart, if the head and the hands are to become connected again. Throughout the film, one message resonates. The heads and minds who planned were not able to get the job done. The hands of the underprivileged and workers could not conceive the plans that they labored for. Missing was the Heart, the Mediator, the one needed to make certain that all were allowed to become connected. Perhaps theres simply too many of the wrong self appointed speakers who fancy their notions as correct. Yet they do surely speak from their hearts, if not connecting the logic of the head. A gifted one will use the heart to influence the head, if the hands are to be connected. There seems no other way around it, if the bodys intent is to become as one. (Bubbas thoughts for today are in interest of the recent entry of communication planet Mercury, now in the optimistic, philosophical fire sign of Sagittarius. )
