Beware of the Judas Goat. The first IBA was the judas goat which is the goat that gets trained to lead the other (fellow) goats to their slaughter who in the end gets slaughter too. I refer to this metaphor which came from a friend of mine when we were discussing the IBA I was implementing for Moose Cree First Nation which was with De Beers Canada. I noticed all resource companies across Canada seem to be using the same format (IBA) with the same deals. I never heard of that metaphor and it did become evident that the first IBA was the Judas Goat and in our case it was the one signed by Attawapiskat First Nation with De Beers. And it seemed all James Bay (Ontario) IBA followed because our leadership thought this was the way to go without knowing what was in the Attawapiskat IBA as it was deemed confidential and that format was handed to Moose Cree without our own being put on the table. De Beers paid for the IBA along with our (Lawyer) negotiators and FN negotiators. The lawyers were not used for law advise but only to negotiate but charged legal fees and subsequently (of course) got paid more than our own FN negotiators. I can now honestly say what a shame it was to even implement that shady deal. Once shady always shady no trying to make the best of it because nothing for the best ever came from it for our members as a whole but a few jobs and contracts for the few.....
