Beware the Ides of March, are the words spoken by a soothsayer to Caesar in Act I of William Shakespeares play Julius Caesar. Ides of March was how the Romans marked the passing of each month. It represented the middle of the month, as the Kalendae was the first day of the month (and was the origin of the word calendar) and Nones, nine days prior to the Ides. These were reference terms of the Julian calendar, a new way to mark the days of the year that became the precursor of todays calendar. The Julian calendar is named after its inventor - Julius Caesar.
