Beyond The Roses Equine Rescue and Retirement, a 501c3 thoroughbred aftercare program, is proud to announce that the Saddle Cloth provided to California Chrome, winner of the the 2014 Kentucky Derby and Preakness, for the 2014 Belmont Stakes with his name spelled wrong, has been donated by Team Chrome to help raise money to assist our efforts to rehab, retrain and re-home retired racehorses. The Saddle Cloth is also personally signed by his jockey Victor Espinoza and trainer Art Sherman and comes with a Letter of Authenticity. An Ebay auction will begin live on Monday, October 20, 2014, and close on Thursday, October 30, 2014. 100% of the proceeds will go to assist the horses currently in our program and future horses needing assistance. At the Kentucky Derby, California Chrome’s saddle cloth was misspelled “Califorina Chrome.” Pimlico followed suit, printing one cloth with the correct spelling and one with the misspelling. Following suit of the other two tracks and fostering a superstition born on the first stop of the Triple Crown, the connections of California Chrome were presented with two saddlecloths, that they requested, upon his arrival at Belmont Park – one bearing the proper spelling of the colts name and one deliberately misspelled Califorina Chrome, which makes this saddle cloth a “one of a kind”. California Chrome is owned by Perry Martin from Yuba City, California, and Steve Coburn of Topaz Lake, Nevada, who named their partnership DAP Racing, standing for Dumb Ass Partners”. California Chromes trainers are the father–son team of Art and Alan Sherman. When California Chrome was two years old, he was sent to the Shermans training stable. The colts first win came in his second race, but he ran inconsistently until being paired with the jockey Victor Espinoza. The rapport that developed between Espinoza and California Chrome led to a six-win streak that included the San Felipe Stakes and Santa Anita Derby as well as the Kentucky Derby and Preakness. California Chrome, by Lucky Pulpit, and has had a huge impact on thoroughbred racing in 2014 which earned him the title “the people’s horse” with his 2014 wins of 5 of 7 races, including the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes. His current earnings total $3,542,650. California Chrome’s next endeavor will be the 2014 Grade 1 Breeders Cup at Santa Anita Race Course on November 1st where it is anticipated that he will challenge the only two horses to defeat him this year. California Chrome is also one of the top contenders for the 2014 title of “Horse Of The Year”.
