Intro: We have examined the different enemies of God presented in this book (the dragon [12:3]; the beast from the sea [13:1]; the beast from the earth [13:11] and the great whore/Babylon [17:5]). We are now going to see their demise in reverse order (Babylon [17:16; 18:1-24]; the beasts [19:20]; the dragon/devil [20:10]) before we see the final blessedness of Gods people (21:1-22:21). 1. Who or what is the Great Whore/Babylon the Great? From what we have examined in chapters 17-18 can we make an identifcation? Do we have any dissenters from the position we have presented thus far? Clue: we must do justice to the two aspects of Babylon (woman and city). 2. How does chapter 17 describe for us the historical (and future) development of the Antichrist? 3. What is the meaning of the seven mountains (17:9-11)? 4. Who are the 10 horns of 17:12? What is their relationship to a) the beast; b) Babylon? Why do they ultimately hate Babylon and destroy her? 5. Which war is described in 17:14? What comfort does v. 14 give to us? 6. Chapter 18 describes in some detail the fall of Babylon (already announced in Rev. 14:8;17:1 and 17:6). Look up Isaiah 13:19-21; 21:9; 47:1-15; Jer 51:6-9, 60-64 and Ezek 27:29-36 and take note of allusions to those passages in Revelation 18. What do we learn in Revelation 18 about Babylon generally (her role in the world, her power, her appeal/attraction, her activity, etc)? 7. How is Babylons destruction announced and described as a) sudden; b) final; c) just; d) total/complete? 8. How do the various parties (kings, merchants. etc) and the saints respond to the destruction of Babylon? 9. Does chapter 18 (or do other passages) indicate to us how Babylon will fall (i.e, will God use any particular instruments to accomplish Babylons destruction?) 10. What warning do we receive from this chapter?
