Big Red Update I was really dismayed yesterday when I got a call from the vet stating that someone has made a complaint about Big Red and if I do not put him on antibiotics they will report me to the SPCA, as I am causing undue suffering and pain. This is true I have not chosen at this time to use antibiotics as believe that his current treatment he is getting, large doses of Vitamin C, is working perfectly fine. Joint ills is not a condition that clears up quickly and even on aggressive antibiotics it could take weeks or months for him to improve. It does not make any sense in my mind to take him off his current treatment, when it is working and put him on antibiotics with no guarantee that they will work at all. Prior to the phone call I had 2 blood tests done 4 days apart and an improvement on the second test prompted me to continue with his current treatment. It was then decided between me and my vet to do another blood test in 7 days time and if no improvement than I was more than happy to use the antibiotics. Vitamin C in large doses has worked a charm for Blue Moon, it pulled Big Red through a bad case of pneumonia and last time I had a foal with the same degree of pneumonia several years ago, I put him on antibiotics and he died a day later. However proof is in the pudding and 10 days ago Big Red needed assistance to even stand up himself and shuffled around like an old man with his walker in the rest home. For the first time in 5 weeks he is showing more and more normal behaviour for a foal. Everyday he improves in leaps and bounds. Today he followed me all around the paddock, while grooming me when we stopped. He is by no means out of hot water yet, but it is such a joy to see so much hope and improvement in one that has been through so much. Hope you enjoy the video, he has put a big smile on my dial! :)
