Big Willie almost lost his family home Big Willie Mason not only went DUI this week but almost lost his family home in Newcastle because of financial difficulties. Only an emergency $30,000 pay advance from the Newcastle Knights saved his Charlestown house from being repossessed by the bank. The Sunday Telegraph found a note on his front door: This property is now in the possession of the mortgagee. Unauthorised entry is prohibited. Mason shares the house with his mother and younger brother, who also plays for the Knights in the lower grades. Property records show he purchased the property back in 2002 for $420,000. He has since borrowed against the mortgage. They (the bank) were threatening to kick everyone out and causing me drama, Mason said. Ive been concentrating on paying my house off at Clovelly which is worth about $4 million. I got behind with the Charlestown house but the club has helped me out. The payment has been made everything is sweet. Its private and I dont any drama with it. Mason said his loan was with a company called Pepper, who are mortgage brokers. A spokesman for the company refused to comment on Masons position with the mortgage. The house drama capped a dramatic week for the former State of Origin forward who returned a reading of .09 when pulled over for a 7am random breath test on the way to training on Monday. He admitted to having 10 beers and some spirits the night before on Australia Day. Im filthy at myself for making the wrong decision, Mason said. I didnt even think about being over the limit. If I had, I would have rang one of the boys for a lift. Even when they pulled me over, I thought Id be right because Id had a good seven hours sleep. But there are no excuses. Its completely my fault. Ive got no-one to blame but myself and I have to take responsibility for it. Ill cop whatever is coming to me. I should have shown better judgment.
