Big cat from Bandipur - I photographed this huge and handsome male - TopicsExpress

Big cat from Bandipur - I photographed this huge and handsome male at Bandipur, he needs no introduction. It was peak winters early February and as you may know during this season the light fades off so quickly. This is a very late evening shot at 6:10pm and during this shoot there were several challenges mainly low light condition. The other challenge was the clutter due to the bamboo groves; this can be frustrating at times but on positive side one should consider making images with natural habitat. It was important for us to position the jeep at point where the view was clear, and we had only one such gap through the bamboo twigs. Fortunately ours was the only vehicle at this location and Kiran our star JLR driver did a fabulous job so did Nataraju Bandipur naturalist who guided him well. There was another drama during this sighting, a large tusker too was thirsty and chose the same water hole and as he picked up the scent of the tiger he gave mock charge at him. The tusker was too big for the tiger to defend so the tiger backed off. However to my surprise after about 10 mins as soon as the tusker left the water hole, the tiger was back again for a drink. These were some amazing moments at Bandipur in 2010, and during those days spotting tigers was never easy. I love the tiger’s unique posture here, completely flat on the ground and of course keeping a direct eye contact with me and this is what a photographer is after…
