Big fish the order of the day FISHING has been an important part of the North-East Tasmanian community for some years now, and a new event this year has highlighted just how much the kids of the North-East love their fishing. The L Wilson Junior Anglers Day at Springfield, held on Friday last week was a huge success, with three times the number of anglers expected arriving at Springfield to try their luck. Over 100 kids turned up with a vast collection of mums, dads, nans and pops to help bait the hooks and net the fish. Generously hosted by local dairy farmer Wayne Bowen, the dam was surrounded with kids and their parents and grandparent looking to hook into those huge rainbow trout kindly donated by Huon Aquaculture and the Inland Fisheries Service. In addition to the rainbow trout, four eels were also caught, which will prove to be a tasty treat for a few around the North-East. Plenty of prizes were donated by L Wilson Fishing Tackle, with local Scottsdale butcher McLennans Butchery donating the meat for the BBQ. While most kids chose to fish with bait, many fish were taken casting soft plastic lures and hardbodied lures. The best hardbody was a pink Zerek Tango Shad that one keen angler managed to scrounge from the organisers, while the best bait was the good old garden worms. The Scottsdale Angling Club facilitated the day and is to be congratulated for an outstanding event. The average size of trout was a little over 3kg, with the biggest fish being a whopping 5kg. Overall there were 25 fish caught, with many fish being released to fight another day. The day was a great success and the club is looking forward to running similar days in the future. - Neil Grose
