Bill Nevins English 324 Introduction to Screen Writing 0930am-1200 noon Fridays Fall Term 8/19/2013-12/7/2013 UNM West (Rio Rancho campus) 3 Credits Instructor: Bill Nevins [email protected] Bill Nevins MA studied English literature and writing at Iona College, U of Connecticut, U of Vermont, UC Berkeley, UNM, and at Naropa U, and he has taught in secondary schools and colleges in the Northeast and Southwest, most recently at UNM Valencia Campus and CNM. Nevins has published his own creative writing and journalism internationally and has written for, consulted on or appeared in some award-winning films. He has attended the Screen Writing Institute at Santa Fe and other film related conferences and training courses. Nevins founded and curates the annual New Mexico Film Festival, now in its third year. Course Description: English 324 is an introductory course in the study and practice of creative writing for film/tv in which students focus on screen writing (story development, adaptation, treatments, scripts). This course will present the mechanical skills necessary to prepare scripts for television and film, using the standard, industry-accepted format for feature films. We will look at both fictional and non fictional (documentary) types of films and screenplays. Each student will write film pitches, treatments and scenes and will have as his her goal the writing of a screenplay for an original short film that may be produced. Lectures, guest talks, readings, and filmed presentations will deal with essential elements such as plot structure, character, and dialogue. A workshop-style class format will provide peer-evaluation and instructor comment on student writings. Previous film writing experience is not necessary. Students will receive information about and encouragement towards publication, marketing and further practice and development of their own creative screen writing skills.
