Biological Hazard in USA on Saturday, 02 November, 2013 at 05:38 (05:38 AM) UTC. Description Health officials confirmed today they are investigating an outbreak of Salmonella in Shasta County. We can confirm there were five cases... in Shasta County, said Jennifer Black, an epidemiologist with the Shasta County Health and Human Services Agency. She said all five people have recovered after coming down with the bug, which is a food borne illness most often found in poultry and eggs. The cases were reported in September, she said. State lab tests showed all of the victims had the same strain. Ronald Owens, with the California Department of Public Health, confirmed the agency is working with local organizations to investigate a strain of salmonella Loma Linda. He declined to comment further. Black said health officials havent determined the origin of the Salmonella. The low number of cases makes it difficult to zero in on a specific cause, she said. Shasta County typically has about 18 cases of Salmonella a year, she said, though the frequency varies throughout the year. Summer typically sees more cases. Salmonella can produce vomiting, fever and diarrhea, the latter of which can lead to dehydration. Its not a deadly organism most of the time, but some people can get very ill, she said. Seniors, infants and those with weakened immune systems are more vulnerable, she said.
