Biologist Irving Weissman of Stanford University School of Medicine in Palo Alto, together with his group of researchers, has just received $20M to continue his decade-long research into an antibody that blocks a protein in those with cancer called CD47...and thereby offers a possible remedy for cancerous tumours. What the anti-CD47 drug does it to coax the immune system into destroying any cancer cells. So far its only been tried out on rats, so the $20M will fund a move to human trials. news.sciencemag.org/health/2012/03/one-drug-shrink-all-tumors?ref=hp
