Birds.... I didnt get to bed till after eleven last night - a late night for me...and so, morning didnt come till a little after six - a sleep-in...gotta get my seven hours! Anyway, I still need my morning time, and so... I was late heading off to work - not a problem since I have an extremely flexible part-time schedule and being late...isnt like...meaningful...anymore... As I was driving on Route 5, which travels parallel to the Mohawk River, A giant bird of prey was flying low...towards me...as I approached Fort Johnson - It was a bald eagle! I was flippin out a bit - this being only the second bald eagle Ive ever seen in my life - I couldnt stop looking and kept looking back at it, as I passed...trying to stay in my lane... I got to thinking later in the day; that if I had been on-time...I would have missed the experience altogether...so I wasnt late, after all - I was right on time! On my way home tonight, about a half-mile from my home...and flying above me, towards my home, was a red-tail hawk...flying low...wanting to get my attention, which it did... When I got home, it was still light - nice to have a bit of daylight left when I get home from work and so, after changing, I put on my boots and went out for a hike. I wanted to go to the top of the ridge to see if thered be another wondrous red/pink sunset kissing the day goodbye, and while it wasnt as spectacular as two nights ago, it was very nice...and peace-ful - reminded me of the angels in the movie, City of Angels with nick Cage - where all the angels would gather to see and hear the music as the sun rose and set...each and every day...thats where I was... But...then I heard some branch cracking...off to my right - over near the gorge...so I went to investigate...and as I made my way to the rock ledge above the gorge, I watched as a turkey who was in one tree fifty feet above the ground, flew to another on the opposite side of the gorge. She was in the upper branches of the guardians of the gorge - the ancient white pines and hemlocks, who guard the mystery from prying satellite eyes... ...Made me think about bumble bees, for a time - how some dont understand how they can fly, given their huge bodies compared to their relatively small set of wings - and yet they seem not to notice. Its the same with turkeys - they are such big birds and spend most of their time walking on the ground...and yet, they are capable of flight - flight that takes them to the tops of the trees, where they find safety from the fox and coyotes...each evening... I crossed over, above the rock ceiling of our little cave, and as I made my way along the deer trail...I was startled again and again, by three, four, five, six, seven...turkeys, as they flew off from their roosts high up in the canopy...startled...by...me... I was both exhilarated, and a bit sad, to think that I may have upset their evening routine...and then I got to thinking of all the big birds that had flown into my life today... ...will have to look up the totem meanings of all my feathery friends today - must be some good reason they all came into my life today...SWEET!
