Source: Birmingham Police Department BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - A Birmingham police officer has been arrested on drug charges. Kenneth Padgett, 28, was taken into custody around 9 p.m. Monday night. He has been charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of marijuana. The police department said they received information about Padgetts illegal drug activity that was later confirmed by an internal investigation. Birmingham Police Spokesman Lt. Sean Edwards says Padgetts arrest does not represent the the officers who work hard to serve the city. The sad part is the first thing is they violate their very law they took an oath to uphold. They forfeit their right to be a police officer and they also tarnish the badge and what it stands for, Edwards said. The Birmingham Police Department is conducting both a criminal and internal investigation. Padgett is currently on paid administrative leave pending the results of the investigation. Police say he could lose his job. Most of our officers work hard every day and are committed to serving the citizens of this great city. Unfortunately, there are some from time to time that make decisions that totally go against what we stand for as an organization, Birmingham Police Chief A.C. Roper said. Bottom-line, this type of behavior will not be tolerated, the police chief added.
