Birthday Fic 13/20 It was only Argus’ second year as caretaker at Hogwarts and he loved it. The students were quirkily mischievous, though it would be nice if they remembered to wipe their feet before coming into the Entrance Hall, the ghosts were polite and helpful when they could be, although that Peeves did cause some trouble, and best of all, he got to be close to magic, even though he couldn’t really do any himself. Since coming to the school to work Argus had had just one birthday, he didn’t particularly like crowds so he didn’t bother telling many people. Only Mrs Norris, the groundskeeper at the time, really knew. She was his greatest confidant and friend since he had arrived at the school and continued to be until five year later when her husband convinced her to move with him for his job. Argus was miserable and, since he had always worn his heart on his sleeve, his misery caught the student’s attention, their jeers and jokes, and he began to see their cruelty. Before she left, and on his birthday no less, a day he’d shared only with her, she had pressed a tiny bundle of fur into his arms, “she’s part Kneazle,” she’d said and, with a sad smile, kissed his cheek before stepping onto the carriage that would take her away forever. Argus was in such a state of despondency that he began to talk to Mrs Norris all the time, even though she wasn’t there, only the remarkable thing was that the cat followed through on his orders and requests, going to and fro, patrolling corridors and fetching tools for him. He knew it would be painful but he decided on a name for her then and there. Not much had changed since so long ago before his heart had been shattered; Filch still spent his birthdays in a state of blissful solitude, far away from those rotten kids, with his precious Mrs Norris. - Cristie
