Biti tours demolished homes in Epworth, Chitungwiza Wednesday, 01 October 2014 The MDC Renewal Team Secretary General, Hon. Tendai Biti has described as callous, ruthless and heartless the ongoing housing demolitions taking place in Epworth and Chitungwiza. Hon. Biti said this while touring and assessing the damage that has left thousands of families homeless and stranded after the town authorities demolished houses in the two areas. “These demolitions are callous, ruthless and heartless. The demolitions are politically motivated against perceived MDC members and against the Constitution of Zimbabwe,” Hon. Biti told hundreds of stranded residents as they narrated their ordeal during the tour today. The residents told Hon. Biti that the demolitions which are being carried out by the local councils with the support of armed riot police officers started last Thursday night and no prior warning or court order was given to the affected residents. Most of the residents told the secretary general that they were allocated stands to build their houses by Zanu PF officials just before the 2013 elections but were shocked when their houses were being demolished as Zanu PF was going against its elections promises. “Besides being left homeless with my children failing to attend school, my husband is among other scores of residents in Epworth that were assaulted and later arrested and are currently in remand prison,” Cecilia Dengu whose house was demolished in Dombo area in Epworth said. Other affected areas that were visited by Hon. Biti were in Chitungwiza’s Unit A near Chibuku Stadium, Velvet area and Unit P near the Roman Catholic Church. The residents of Chitungwiza accused Local Government Deputy Minister, Joel Biggie Matiza and the Zanu PF government of authorizing the demolitions despite promising them that there would be no demolitions before the affected residents had been given alternative land. Hon. Biti promised the residents that he would personally look into the issue with the relevant authorities including legal channels so that the demolitions are stopped. Hon. Biti was accompanied by the MDC Youth Assembly President, Hon. Solomon Madzore and his secretary general, Promise Mkwananzi; national spokesperson, Jacob Mafume, Kambuzuma MP, Hon. Willias Madzimure and the Chitungwiza Renewal Team provincial leadership.
