Black Friday turns into a no-doubter By Derek Smith BELMONT – The rivalry game between East Gaston and South Point known as Black Friday turned out to be a black and blue Friday for the Warriors. The Red Raiders manhandled East Gaston 56-7 at Lineberger Stadium for their seventh straight win over the Warriors in the two school’s first Big South conference game matchup since 2008. South Point (6-0, 1-0 Big South 3A) scored every way imaginable including taking the first play from scrimmage 56 yards for a touchdown on Tyler Bray’s breakaway jaunt. Bray, who would become South Point’s all-time leading rusher after a 50-yard run with 25.9 seconds left in the first half, gained 127 yards on nine carries and scored two touchdowns on the ground while returning a kickoff 76 yards for a score in the third quarter on his record-setting night. “That’s some feat because there have been a lot of great ones come through here,” South Point coach Mickey Lineberger said, of Bray’s surpassing of Aaron Crumbley’s career rushing record of 4,644 yards. “That’s a real, real big accomplishment. I’m real proud of him. He’s one of the best football players I’ve ever been around. He’s a fierce competitor and I’m glad to see him have success.” Bray’s long touchdown run 32 seconds into the game set the tone for the rest of the evening. On the Red Raiders’ third play from scrimmage, Diontrea King scampered 46 yards into the end zone and the rout was on. South Point led 42-0 midway through the third quarter before East Gaston got on the scoreboard for the only time of the night on a 13-yard run by Trevor Townsend. Quarterback Jaquan Brooks completed just four passes on seven attempts but two were for touchdowns – a 36-yarder to Trey Crenshaw in the first quarter and a 21-yarder to Jeffrey Pearsall in the second quarter. Crenshaw also rushed for a five-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. The Red Raiders’ defense, which held the Warriors to 54 yards of offense in the first half and 141 on the game, contributed to the scoring barrage with a 16-yard interception by J.T. Star in the second quarter. About the only thing that South Point didn’t do well was hold on to the football, fumbling three times. “I wasn’t real pleased with the way we looked after the ball,” Lineberger said. “That ball was squirting around like a grape. We’ve got to eliminate ourselves as an opponent.” East Gaston (0-5, 0-1 Big South 3A) entered the contest winless and decimated by injuries. Freshman quarterback Josh Benfield, a backup on the junior varsity team, was the Warriors’ fifth signal-caller under center this season. Still, East Gaston coach Sean Joyce made no excuses for his team. “Not even going to talk about injuries,” he said. “The guys we had out there played their hearts out. I’m very proud of the way we played. (South Point) could have put a hundred on us if they wanted. We were outmatched but so be it. It didn’t matter.” Benfield completed four of 15 passes for 58 yards with an interception in his varsity debut. Three completions went to Bailey Crane, who finished with 54 yards receiving. Dontavis Walker was the most productive member of the offense, rushing for 81 yards on 17 carries. South Point travels to Hunter Huss Friday and East Gaston visits Lake Norman Charter.
