There are very nice homes owned by both black and white residents who have formed a pleasant community overall. However, there are also sections closer to St. Louis proper where the housing is occupied by poorer neighbors. The Housing Unit where most of the violence has sprung is from more transient families and where policing has different standards for those of color than whites. This disparity made for the perfect storm in an otherwise quiet, small town in Mid America - it can happen anywhere as long as the system of justice is not equal to all. That is why you will see many white protestors standing up for equal justice mixed in the crowds you will see in the media reports.
