Black money, coal Scam, 2G, 3G, Love Jihad, Godse, Conversions, Astrology, Vedas, Gita, Plastic Surgery etc etc- Modi’s first six months in office have been all about controversies. Every day, a BJP leader makes a communal/divisive/controversial statement and that keeps the entire media and the populace busy for the day. But, are these controversies incidental or is this a very well thought out plan to make sure nobody discusses the buckets full of development that were promised before the elections and that never arrived? For instance, when the black money issue was being discussed widely, it was alienating BJP’s vote base since their propaganda was being thoroughly busted and BJP was getting very very desperate. But now that the discussion is back to conversion, love jihad, haramzaadein, BJP’s vote base is again galvanizing around these communal issues. Moreover, these controversies have kept everybody so occupied that it has also becomes easier for Modi to appease the Adanis and the Ambanis of the world. While all of us have been busy raging about the relentless hate mongering by BJP leaders, the country is being sold off to the corporates very swiftly and silently. Environment laws have been diluted, labour laws have been diluted, interest rates on FDs have been cut, SBI is giving out billion dollar loans so that an Australian coal mine can be developed which will enrich only and only Adani. Farmer suicides still continue across the country, crime against women continues to rise, price rise is unabated, GDP is tanking, Rupee is at a 9 month low, infiltration and attack on army bases from across the border has gathered pace, .. the list can go on. In short, for everything that Modi promised before elections, either the Government has taken a U-turn or have failed to deliver. Yet, these issues which actually affect us in our day to day life are not being discussed in the public domain as widely as the love jihad or the conversion issue. And the reason is that our entire attention span is being consumed by these BJP fueled controversies. In fact this methodology of vitiating the political atmosphere and polarizing the populace is the only politics BJP knows and right now they are batting on the front foot because their plan of keeping the masses occupied is working perfectly. If we do not recognize these diversionary tactics of BJP and if we do not start asking them the difficult questions, Adanis and Ambanis will continue prospering and the common man’s life will continue being a hell hole.
