Blackest Friday 1.4 million employees work for Walmart. 71% will have to forego a holiday designated for time with, appreciation of family. 361,000 work for Target. 368,000 work for Kroger. 180,000 work for Best Buy. 322,000 work for Sears. 151,000 for JCPennys. This is a total of 2,782,000 people. These are daughters, mothers, sisters, brothers, grandparents, fathers, cousins, etc. Each person represents a household. Each household is being told to deal with it. Big lots starts sales at 8 am, while many others begin at 6pm on Thursday. Black Friday sales are more important than time with families? Ironically those who made the decision to keep 3 million + people working on this holiday have themselves made plans to travel, and spend time with their families. The haves and the have nots. Why is there such a class distinction? Why do the majority of people out way the noble virtuous desires of the few? Sure this article could be interpreted as a complaint, and maybe there should be a segment of society that takes one for the team. Heres the problem. This monster of consumerism wont stop. At current rate Black Friday will begin 7am Thanksgiving Day annihilating the traditional holiday for millions involved in sales and retail. Christmas Day will be fraught with great deals, and many will forego watching the joy in the faces of their children opening their presents. Thanksgiving is a time when many travel miles to be with the ones they love. Unless you are in retail. The precedent has been set, and soon many will have to swallow the sacrifice for consumerism, and corporate financial interest. In just a few hours people will say thanks for what they have then trample others for things they dont. Not realizing the deals are items that have been previously increased, and then reduced to give the illusion of savings. Not understanding that the electronics are cheaply manufactured with low quality parts. All the while increasing credit card bills, and plunging a nation already in debt further. This trend can be reversed, and family values honored once again. However it wont happen without the majority support. Perhaps this insight will cause some to lobby for a change. One can only hope. syracuse/news/index.ssf/2013/11/black_friday_2013_71_percent_of_walmart_employees_will_work_on_thanksgiving.html
