Blair Sawer is 5 years old and severely disabled by Cerebral Palsy. 8 weeks ago Blair underwent major surgery to both of his hips (Bilateral Femoral Osteotomy) at the Childrens Hospital at Westmead. The surgery could be described as similar to a bilateral hip replacement... a massive surgery for a 5 year old. Blairs recovery according to not only his surgeon, physio, paediatrician, GP and teacher (who has worked with children with CP for over 30 years) is nothing short of extraordinary. His teacher & physio have both told me they have never known a child to recover so remarkedly and so fast! Blair was out of hospital within a week, back at school within 3 weeks, doing gymnastics and swimming within 3 weeks.... and horse riding within 5 weeks. Prior to the surgery Blair woke almost every night of his 5 years of life... from about 18 months of age he would wake in hip pain. Most nights up to 3-4 times... many a night up to every hour in pain. Since about 5 weeks post surgery, for the first time in Blairs life he has slept almost every night straight through and pain free. As a result Blair is even more alert and aware than he was prior to the surgery. Blair is so much brighter... he doesnt stop talking all day now! He not only actively participates in a conversation, but he will engage in a conversation with a person. He wants to know everything now... he wants to know why? And what? And how? And when? And where...?! And he is just so so so cheeky and funny! The things he will come out with! I often have no idea just how he could know these things. He blows me away! Blair never complains... he faces every challenge with a determination beyond his years and the biggest smile on his face. And he has faced many challenges. And been on many an adventure. He has his very own Bucket List.... you see Blair loves to move... especially fast! To date has been on a bus, a plane, goes 4WDing down sand dunes and in the bush with the family, goes motor biking with Daddy, horse riding at school, boating, quad biking with Mummy, on a seaplane, a BIG rollercoaster (and NOT a kiddies one!), goes surf skiing with his Daddy & his brother, likes to mow the lawns on ride-on-mower, been on a catamaran, in a police car, and even been snorkelling! He is fearless... and tells me he now wants to jump out of a plane! But his greatest challenge now that his hips have been operated on will be to walk. And I have a feeling he just might do it! facebook/BlairsWish
